Announcements

BISHOP’S VISITATION – Next week on June 13th, Bishop Lucinda Ashby will be making her official visit to St. Benedict’s.  This is the first time she will be with us in person, as last year’s visit was virtual via Zoom.  Please be sure to turn out to welcome her.  The service will be held outdoors, with video and audio live-streamed into the church for those who prefer to sit there.  Refreshments will be served after church.

JUNETEENTH – June 19 – is a day to celebrate the emancipation of those who were enslaved in the United States.  It is commemorated on the anniversary date of the June 19, 1865 announcement which proclaimed freedom from slavery in Texas. Join us for an evening of short films and discussion.  This series of short films,  “A Conversation on Race”  created for the New York Times,  features everyday people as they discuss issues of race and identity in America.  Saturday June 19 at 7pm in our Zoom room.

ALTAR GUILD WORK DAY –  On Monday, June 7th, the Altar Guild and anyone else wishing to help will be cleaning and polishing candlesticks and chalices and so on and generally making everything look bright and shiny for the Bishop’s visit.  From 10am – join us if you can!

HOLLISTER INSTITUTE DISCUSSION – Throughout June, John Horsley will be leading a book study based on “Renewing the Process of Creation” by Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson. Drawing on process theology, Judaism and science, this book considers the meaning of Creation, and humanity’s role as steward and partner in Creation. Please consider taking part. You can be sure of a good and fascinating conversation. Four Thursdays at 10am (June 3 through June 24)  In St. Benedict’s Zoom room.

THANKSGIVING FOR JOHN’S MUSIC MINISTRY –  John Cribb’s last Sunday as Music Director will be June 20th.   Please plan to stay after church that day so that we can take some time together to thank him, express our love and appreciation, and enjoy each other’s company.

RECTOR’S DISCRETIONARY FUND – On the last Sunday of each month the loose cash in the plate offering is designated to the RDF, to help those in the parish or the wider community in need of emergency assistance.  You may also contribute by check anytime to St. Ben’s with “RDF” in the memo line.  Thank you for your generosity.

TUESDAY NIGHT VESPERS – Consider joining us for our indoor Vesper service at the church on Tuesdays at 5:30pm.  People are still required to wear masks and observe proper social distancing.  There won’t be a potluck following the service, but people are encouraged to bring their own snacks and stay to socialize if they wish.

EMAILS FROM ST BENEDICT’S –  A number of people have reported problems receiving the group emails sent out by the church.  They are getting caught in Spam filters.   We use a system called FreshVine to send the emails for the priority seating list, the Ben Weekly, our newsletter, important announcements, and other messages.  The sender is usually listed as no-reply@freshvine.co  Please be sure to list that address in your address book so that it will be recognized as a trusted source

VIRTUAL COFFEE HOUR – With our return to in-person services there is opportunity for those present to stay and socialize together. Coffee is not served but people may bring their own thermos. For those watching at home, the Zoom room is still available between 11:30-12:30 on Sundays for informal no-host conversations.

DAILY PAUSINGS Join us for Pausings – a few minutes of reflection with Caro+ posted every day at about 7pm on St. Benedict’s Facebook page.  These few minutes of poetry, psalms, and prayers are a great way to end your day, or access anytime.

BIDDING BOOK PRAYERS   If you’d like to request prayers for someone to have their names read out during the worship services on Sunday, please submit their names to stefshuman@sbcglobal.net during the week.

PERSONAL PRAYER   A member of the Healing Prayer Ministry team is available each week to pray with you for special concerns.  If you’d like this prayer support this week, contact Lisa Gonzalez at (805) 441-3386. If no answer, please leave a message and your call will be returned.

Laughing with the Trinity

Do you want to know what goes on in the core of the Trinity?
I will tell you.

In the core of the Trinity
the Father laughs
and gives birth to the Son.
The Son laughs back at the Father
and gives birth to the Spirit.
The whole Trinity laughs
and gives birth to us.

– Meister Eckhart, German theologian, philosopher and mystic (1260-1327)

Be well, be safe, and stay in touch.
