Announcements

BISHOP’S VISITATION  – Bishop Lucinda Ashby will make her official visit to St. Benedict’s on Sunday, June 13th.  This will be a opportunity for people to be confirmed or received into The Episcopal Church.  If you are interested, please speak with Caro+.

NEXT SUNDAY IS PENTECOST, celebrated 50 days after Easter Day. The word Pentecost comes from the Greek word Pentēkostē, which means “the 50th day.”  In the Old Testament, “Pentecost” refers to the Feast of Weeks, a seven-week agricultural event that focused on the harvesting of first crops. In the New Testament, “Pentecost” refers to the coming of the Spirit shortly after Jesus’ death, resurrection, and ascension. Speaking in tongues, a manifestation of receiving the Spirit, is interpreted by some to symbolize the church’s worldwide mission, and the Day of Pentecost is thought to be the origin of sending the church out into the world.  Therefore it is sometimes considered to be the “Birthday of the Church!”  You are invited to wear RED (or at least a touch of it) traditionally symbolizing the Holy Spirit, in celebration.

NEW HOLLISTER BOOK STUDY STARTING IN JUNE During June, John Horsley will be leading a book study based on “Renewing the Process of Creation” by Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson. This book draws on process theology, Judaism and science to consider the meaning of Creation, and humanity’s role as steward and partner in Creation. It will be a good follow-up to the current discussion that the Rev. Mike Eggleston is leading on Piglet’s Process – see Mike for more information on that. Please consider taking part on Thursdays at 10am – June 3 to 24. You can be sure of a good and fascinating conversation.

A festival of a book…. Addictively and accessibly readable, adventurously faithful to the scientific and to the biblical heritage, [it] guides us all―spiritual seekers and skeptics, congregations and classes―to a celebration of our shared, fragile and gorgeous creaturehood.”   ―Catherine Keller, professor of constructive theology, Drew University

TUESDAY NIGHT VESPERS – Consider joining us for our indoor Vesper service at the church on Tuesdays at 5:30pm.  People are still required to wear masks and observe proper social distancing.  There won’t be a potluck following the service, but people are encouraged to bring their own snacks and stay to socialize if they wish.

SUNDAY INDOOR WORSHIP  – Our 10:30am worship next week will be a Eucharist service  Face masks are still required and social distancing protocols will be maintained.  As we are limited to 25% occupancy in the sanctuary, we will use a lottery system to allocate seats and there will be some overflow seating outdoors on the veranda and in the Great Room. The service will also be live-streamed on Facebook for those who stay at home.

VIRTUAL COFFEE HOUR – With our return to in-person services there is opportunity for those present to stay and socialize together. Coffee is not served but people may bring their own thermos. For those watching at home, the Zoom room is still available between 11:30-12:30 on Sundays for informal no-host conversations.

DAILY PAUSINGS Join us for Pausings – a few minutes of reflection with Caro+ posted every day at about 7pm on St. Benedict’s Facebook page.  These few minutes of poetry, psalms, and prayers are a great way to end your day, or access anytime.

BIDDING BOOK PRAYERS   If you’d like to request prayers for someone to have their names read out during the worship services on Sunday, please submit their names to stefshuman@sbcglobal.net during the week.

PERSONAL PRAYER   A member of the Healing Prayer Ministry team is available each week to pray with you for special concerns.  If you’d like this prayer support this week, contact Helen Schnieders at (818) 324-2646. If no answer, please leave a message and your call will be returned.

DONATIONS  We are grateful for God’s financial providence and blessing. Thank you for making your offerings by mail to our PO Box, or on-line at: https://www.StBensLosOsos.org/support-us/       Thank you!

A PRAYER FOR ST. BENEDICT’S:  Almighty God, whose loving hand has given us all that we possess and has blessed us with the community of St. Benedict’s: Grant us the grace to see your abundance, and the openness to receive the full riches of your blessing, that we may continue to grow and flourish as your people in this place; that we may be your faithful stewards and may more surely fulfill our role in your eternal purpose, to the honor of God Christ our Lord. Amen.

Be well, be safe, and stay in touch.
